Testimonial:

We’d heard a lot about Goolengook, but had never been there despite being aware of the campaign to save the old growth forests. When we saw the ad for a guided weekend camp and walk in the Goolengook area in the FOE e-bulletin we decided to give it a go, particularly given the experience and knowledge of the people who were to run the trip and guide the walks. After meeting in Orbost we headed into the forest to the site of the blockade, where the camp was set up. Following a late morning tea, we headed off for a ˝ day walk out along a logging track, and then back along the Goolengook river, which was quite slow going because of the thick vegetation and off track walking. However, it was good to finally see some old growth trees, and gain a clearer appreciation of the impact of logging old growth forests. A hearty evening meal finished off a peaceful and informative, but tiring day. The next morning after another hearty meal we again headed out along a logging track and then cut off into the forest, to visit a few rare slender tree ferns and then return to camp along the Goolengook river. During this ˝ day walk we also saw the stark effects of different logging regimes and forestry practices. Then after a late lunch we returned to Orbost driving through different forest types, and hearing about their ecological characteristics and various ‘management’ practices.

We really enjoyed the trip and admired the enthusiastic initiative of the grass roots ecotourism company (rainforest adventures) who looked after us for the weekend. The guides were excellent, energetic and very informative (about both the campaign and the ecology), and we would wholeheartedly recommend the trip to others. We also hope that they can develop a vibrant niche within the ecotourism market, as the national park becomes established. Finally, many thanks all those who have been involved in the Goolengook campaign over the past decade or so, for their outstanding and admirable efforts to get this special area protected.
